Old Encinitas is the walkable downtown along Coast Highway 101, with coffee shops, restaurants and Moonlight Beach close by. Leucadia is the artsy, surf-minded part of town. Cardiff-by-the-Sea has a village feel, Cardiff State Beach and a stretch of restaurants along San Elijo Avenue. New Encinitas is more suburban, with winding streets and family neighborhoods. Olivenhain is inland, with large lots, open space and a horse-country feel.
People love the beaches (Moonlight and Swami's are local favorites), the Meditation Gardens at the Self-Realization Fellowship, San Elijo Lagoon trails, and the mix of small-town shops and good food.
